If you are passionate about nature, you have to know the only tour in Cancun where you can see the four types of cenotes (open, semi-open, cavern and ancient). Immerse yourself in them and feel in contact with nature in an excursion of approximately nine hours of duration.
Brief History of Xenotes
The word "cenote" comes from the Mayan word "dzonot", which means "cavern with a water reservoir". The ancient Maya considered them sacred places, as they were thought to be gateways to the underworld.
There are four different types of cenotes:
The open cenote is perfect for swimming and sporting activities such as kayaking and snorkeling. They commonly have a cylindrical shape and lots of vegetation around their walls.
Semi-open cenotes do not have such a circular shape as the previous ones, and are reached by descending through narrow paths; here the ideal sport activity is rappelling.
As its name indicates, the cavern type of cenote is found inside caves that must be descended. Its formation is due to the collapse of the upper part of the cenote and subway rivers can be seen in its interior. In ancient times they were the perfect setting for Mayan ceremonies.
Finally we find the ancient cenotes, completely open on the surface and inhabited by a multitude of marine and terrestrial species.
